50th Anniversary of Desegregation Prayer Service

Message from Jerry DeFatta JR

Executive Director Southern Miss Alumni Associatation

Good morning,

I hope this email finds each of you well. I appreciate your willingness to participate in the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Desegregation here at Southern Miss. As you know, the final event of our celebration will be an Ecumenical Prayer Service. The event will be held on Sunday, September 6, at 2:30 p.m. in Kennard-Washington Hall, which is located just east of the Aubrey K. Lucas Administration Building.

To access parking for the event, enter the campus from the Hardy Street entrance. Turn right, just past the guard house onto Southern Miss Drive. You will then proceed to Smalling Drive, which will be the first left. Stay on Smalling Drive until you reach a stop sign (the rear of Kennard-Washington Hall will be on your left at the stop, the Honor House will be on your right). Turn left, just past the stop sign to access the parking lot. A space will be reserved in your name directly behind the building and a member of the Alumni Association staff will be there to meet you and ensure you make it to the right location. I have attached a map, with a pin on the location of the parking lot for your information.

We will begin the program promptly at 2:30. I have attached the program for your review. Please ensure that I have the correct spelling of your name and that other information such as reading text and organization names is accurate as well. The program will begin with a song from the Afro-American Student Organization Gospel Choir. Dr. Ramp will greet the audience and speak briefly about the purpose of the event. Following his remarks, he will lead the audience in the prayer listed in the program. The readings will follow in the order listed on the program and following the readings, the AASO Choir will share an anthem. Rev. Cathey will deliver the remarks for the service and Reverend Morris will conclude the program with a benediction. Following the prayer, Rev. Morris will thank everyone for attending and ask that everyone have a blessed afternoon.

If you have any questions, concerns or would like to discuss your role in greater detail, please feel free to contact me at your convenience at the number below. These programs will be sent to print Friday morning at 8 a.m., so if there is an error please don’t hesitate to contact me immediately.

Again, thank you for your willingness to participate in this important celebration.
